Sam Ehlinger throws touchdown on first play of the season for Texas (Video)
Sam Ehlinger scored a touchdown on the first play of Texas’ season opener against UTEP.
Tom Herman couldn’t have scripted it any better. On the first play of the season for Texas, Sam Ehlinger threw a touchdown pass.
The Longhorns lined up at the 22-yard line against UTEP on Saturday and didn’t attempt anything particularly crazy,
The simple run-pass option had Ehlinger pick the latter, popping off a pass inside to Joshua Moore. The receiver took advantage of a poor angle by the safety, then put on the burners to outpace the rest of the defense to the endzone for a 78-yard score.

Sam Ehlinger and Texas got off to a hot start.
The rest of the first quarter went off without a hitch for the Longhorns. Ehlinger tossed another touchdown for 20 yards to Cade Brewer. He then led another scoring drive capped by a 1-yard Roschon Johnson touchdown run.
In all, Ehlinger went 10-of-14 for 193 yards and two touchdowns in the first quarter. Not bad.
With Texas in control against UTEP, it’s clear the Longhorns are ready for a much tougher test. Those will come.
Texas will travel to Texas Tech next week before facing TCU and Oklahoma. The Sooners and quarterback Spencer Rattler put on a show in their opener against Missouri State. So long as both teams keep winning they’ll be on a collision course for Oct. 10 with conference supremacy on the line.
The two quarterbacks could also have Heisman Trophy talk swirling by the time they meet. Ehlinger has hovered on the perimeter of the elite quarterbacks in college football for a couple of years now. The 2020 season could be his moment to take the next step.
