Allen Robinson and Bears resume extension talks
By Mark Powell
After a dramatic week, Allen Robinson is back on track
Robinson deleted any reference to the Bears on his social media earlier this week, and reportedly wanted a trade out of the Windy City, but he’s reversed course on that mindset and is now willing to talk a new contract with Chicago. Mitchell Trubisky’s top target signed with the Bears from Jacksonville in May of 2018, inking a three-year deal worth $42 million.
While that was a solid deal at the time, Robinson’s proven himself far more valuable than that initial contract, hence the need for a new valuation. The Bears relented, but initially didn’t want to negotiate during the season. They’ve been willing to bend on that mindset, thankfully.
Social media tirades don’t change Robinson’s importance to the Bears offense
Chicago’s quarterback controversy has little impact on Robinson, though his familiarity with Trubisky increases his value long-term, especially if the North Carolina product can finally prevail through his on-field demons. Trubisky and Nick Foles’ quarterback battle continued into the regular season.
Robinson’s only made one Pro Bowl in his NFL career, though he was arguably slighted last year when he caught 98 passes for 1,147 yards despite the Bears poor quarterback play. Perhaps most impressive about Robinson is that in both Chicago and previously Jacksonville, he’s hasn’t had a capable signal-caller. The Bears hope that eventually changes as Trubisky develops, but for now it’s a footnote on a resume Robinson will happily forward to Bears GM Ryan Pace in contract talks.
