Trevor Lawrence, Sam Ehlinger headline 2020 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team
Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence and Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger are among the headliners on the 2020 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.
What began with a list of 149 nominees for the 2020 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team has been whittled down to the 22 college football players who have made the team.
The AFCA Good Works team highlights the players who have been champions for good causes, whether it’s starting nonprofit charities to combat poverty or food insecurity to helping raise money for those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic to raising awareness and lifting voices when it comes to racial injustices and social issues.
“With so many unexpected challenges this year, it’s inspiring to see this group of talented athletes use their voices and actions to make a difference in their communities,” said Pam Hollander, vice president of consumer marketing for Allstate in a press release. “Allstate believes that celebrating positive change creates vibrant and resilient communities, and recognizing acts of kindness these players demonstrate is a vital part of our protection of college football and its traditions.”
Among the headliners on the 22-man team is Clemson Tigers quarterback Trevor Lawrence who was a prominent voice in organizing student demonstrations on campus with teammate Darien Rencher for the Black Lives Matter movement. In addition, he’s been involved with many community service initiatives such as Anderson Interfaith Ministries and has helped raise money for COVID-19 relief in his hometown of Cartersville, Georgia.
Fellow quarterback and Heisman hopeful, Texas signal-caller, Sam Ehlinger makes the team after he raised close to $200,000 for COVID-19 relief in the spring and summer and was another vocal advocate for the Black Lives Matter movement in Austin, Texas.
A third Heisman candidate, Oklahoma State running back Chuba Hubbard, made the AFCA Good Works Team after he started the Your Life, Your Choice nonprofit that helps at-risk youth learn life and leadership skills. He’s also been another voice speaking out on racial injustices.
Oklahoma defensive back Chanse Sylvie established the OneMindset Foundation in Shreveport, LA where he’s helping to empower his hometown community and also developed a police reform advocacy plan that drew interest from Oklahoma state representatives, police department and the mayor.
“I’m excited to team up with Allstate and AFCA to recognize the powerful stories of these players and the incredible work they are doing,” said Tim Tebow, two-time national champion and former Allstate AFCA Good Works Team member in a press release. “It’s truly an honor to call myself an alumnus of the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and continue to highlight the amazing work these student-athletes do off-the-field.”
