Stoops is a familiar name in Norman, and it’s one Oklahoma fans better get used to hearing…again

Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler is dealing for the Sooners, as he completed 12 of his first 13 passes (and counting). One of those completions went to Drake Stoops, as Rattler rolled outside the pocket and the well-coached Stoops broke off his route.

Well-coached, you say? Why might that be? Drake is the son of legendary Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops, who handed the program over to Lincoln Riley just a few short years ago. While that surely feels like an eternity to Sooners fans, Lincoln Riley has taken Stoops’ foundation and rebuilt it into a national power.

The sophomore is ready to step out of his father’s shadow, and while he wasn’t a highly-touted recruit, the wide receiver was expected to make an impact in the 2020 season, especially given how COVID-19 has already impacted Oklahoma’s roster.

Stoops received praise from Riley in camp. The same Sooners program that’s produced the likes of CeeDee Lamb and Marquise Brown in recent memory is a great place for Stoops to set up shop.

“He’s got a chance, he’s got a chance,” Riley said at the time, per OU Daily. “We got some experienced guys, but he’s a playmaker. He is, he’s tough. He’s a playmaker, so he’s got as good a shot as any.”

Stoops’ ability to adjust on the fly was on display on that touchdown pass, and it’s why he’ll continue to get an opportunity with Riley.
