5 SEC storylines Paul Finebaum Show callers will be talking about after Week 6
By John Buhler
The SEC slate will have The Paul Finebaum Show callers talking up a storm on Monday.
There are only two undefeated SEC teams left and The Paul Finebaum Show isn’t ready for that.
We’re only three weeks into the 2020 SEC season, but the amount of compelling storylines coming out of this Power 5 conference are endless. We know it means more down south, and that’s why we love SEC football. So if you tune into The Paul Finebaum Show on Monday afternoon, don’t be the least bit shocked if these are the five storylines driving the program.
Here is what The Paul Finebaum Show callers will be talking about Monday
5. What in the heck is going on with Mike Leach at Mississippi State now?
From the penthouse to what’s beneath the outhouse. Yes, we’re going there, because that’s how we should feel about Mike Leach and the Mississippi State Bulldogs at this time. After upsetting the LSU Tigers in Death Valley, Mississippi State has lost back-to-back games vs. the Arkansas Razorbacks and the Kentucky Wildcats. The Air Raid offense yielded two points in Lexington.
Though it was a game Mark Stoops needed to have to get some unwonted pressure off his back, you would have thought Leach would have put up more than a grand total of two points in the place where he and Hal Mumme first made the Air Raid famous with Tim Couch. Well, K.J. Costello is no Tim Couch and there’s a chance the Bulldogs are the worst team in the SEC West this year.
4. I think we gotta put Coach O on the hot seat, Pawl.
After going 15-0 en route to their fourth national championship in school history, Ed Orgeron might be more like Gene Chizik than we even realized. Though we can say having to play in Week 6 on the road in Columbia, Missouri may have been a contributing factor here, LSU’s defense was rancid against Eliah Drinkwitz’s Missouri Tigers. That is why the Bayou Bengals are now 1-2.
Should Coach O be on the hot seat? No, but guys like Augie down in New Orleans won’t have positive things to say about Orgeron or Bo Pelini’s defense. There are now four teams in the SEC West that are 1-2 through three games and the LSU Tigers are one of them. Defense is Orgeron’s bread and butter, but the Bayou Bengals are starving on that side of the ball in 2020. It’s awful.
3. Jimbo Fisher got his first signature A&M win over a favorite opponent of his.
It was bound to happen, given how much money they paid him to get a lone signature win. Monday will be the greatest day of Matt from San Antonio’s life as a Finebaum caller. He will be thoroughly convinced Kellen Mond earned himself the Heisman Trophy by beating presumptive Heisman Trophy finalist Kyle Trask on his namesake’s field by a field goal. Good for Jimbo Fisher.
Over his time at Texas A&M and at his previous stop with the Florida State Seminoles, Fisher has proven his team doesn’t lose to the Florida Gators. This was a big win for him and the A&M program, but they’re going to need more games like this for us to think the Aggies are a real threat to Alabama in the SEC West. For now, they feel like the second-best team in the division.
2. Who’s going to win between Georgia and Alabama on Saturday, Pawl?
It’s the biggest game of the week, and we cannot wait, Pawl! The No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide will host the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs for the right to say who’s best right now. Alabama has a tremendous offense, as offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian is pushing for his next head coaching opportunity. Too bad Pete Golding’s defense can’t stop anybody.
Georgia is all-in on “The Mailman” Stetson Bennett IV as its starting quarterback. Dan Lanning’s defense is the most ferocious in the Power 5. While Todd Monken’s offense is a work-in-progress, Georgia has shown it plays its best ball in the second half. We have an all-timer on our hands at Bryant-Denny on Saturday night? So who’s gonna win, Pawl? Bama or Georgia?
1. The SEC referees are shamelessly in bed with the Auburn Tigers.
There is no denying it. Every SEC official puts money on the Auburn Tigers to win every week. Back in Week 4, the officials ripped a Kentucky touchdown off the board that swung the momentum of the game. This past week, they refused to let Arkansas recover a backwards pass that Bo Nix threw to the ground in a botched spike attempt. It was egregious and it cost the Hogs the game.
Arkansas should be 2-1 and ranked in the AP Top 25 poll with a top-15 win on the road over Auburn. Instead, the SEC officials gifted Auburn a win because they bet their mortgage payments on Auburn’s money line. That is the only logical explanation here because it was shameful, embarrassing and the worst bad call we’ve seen since the last bad call we saw. I-Man loses it.
So what’s the theme on Monday afternoon from the many Finebaum callers across this great country of ours? I mean, it’s really just more of the same. We’ve got head coaches to fire, coordinators to rip to shreds and officials to harpoon on social media for botching a terrible call. in short, Monday afternoon feels like Monday afternoon again. Be sure to tune in for the madness.
