Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski connect on first Tampa TD for old time’s sake
Rob Gronkowski caught his first TD since December 2018
It took until Week 6, but Rob Gronkowski finally has his first touchdown as a Tampa Bay Buccaneer.
Gronkowski, who came out of retirement to play with Tom Brady in Tampa Bay and was traded from the New England Patriots in exchange for a fourth-round pick, had endured a frustrating start to his career with the Buccaneers.
However, he was finally able to perform a celebratory Gronk spike as he helped the Buccaneers take a commanding lead in the second quarter of Tampa Bay’s matchup with the Green Bay Packers after an initially strong start by Aaron Rodgers and Co.
Gronkowski made a superb adjustment to bring in a third-down pass from Brady that was thrown with exquisite touch, the score putting Tampa Bay up 28-10 and marking the tight end’s first in 679 days.
His last touchdown prior to Sunday came on December 9, 2018 for the Patriots against the Miami Dolphins in a game that came to be known as the Miracle in Miami, after a last-second play that featured multiple laterals clinched victory for the Dolphins.
Of course, that season ended in Super Bowl glory for the Patriots that preceded Gronkowski’s one-year retirement.
The connection between Brady and Gronkowski was critical to New England’s sixth Super Bowl title. Gronkowski’s first touchdown as a Buccaneer suggests their link-up is back working again and, given the depth of talent Tampa Bay has at the offensive skill positions, that could spell significant trouble for the rest of the NFC as the Buccaneers look to mount a run at a second Lombardi Trophy.
