3 trades the Packers must make to be legitimate contenders in 2020
Here are trades the Green Bay Packers must make to be legitimate contenders in 2020. Until that happens, the Packers are going to be average.
The Green Bay Packers impressed everyone against the 1-6 Houston Texans with a convincing 35-20 victory. One week later, they struggled to find any balance against the equally struggling 1-5 Minnesota Vikings. Falling late 28-22, this could be a sign that Green Bay is still a few pieces away.
Credit to the offense late trying to go for the victory. Time however was not their friend. Outside of several big-time plays from Minnesota’s offense, this could have played in the Packers’ favor, but ultimately, that’s the reason Aaron Rodgers will be sitting at 5-2 entering Week 9.
The Packers have been a team to watch at the trade deadline. Now, they must add names if they want to see their stock soar in their favor. In a competitive NFC conference, it’s about staying ahead, and right now Green Bay could be freezing compared to other teams looking to add talent before Tuesday afternoon.
Who should the Packers add to become legitimate contenders at the trade deadline?
Earlier this week, The Athletic reported that the Texans were open to trading wide receiver Will Fuller for the right price. Low and behold, the Packers seemed to be interested in the speedster services for the remainder of the season. After Sunday, Green Bay’s interest needs to change to priority in gaining the veteran receiver to play the No.2 role.
Devante Adams finished with a pair of scores on seven catches for 53 yards. Meanwhile, tight end Robert Tonyan led the team with five catches for season-high 79 yards. Outside of those two, there wasn’t a target with more than 20 yards on the day. Outside of Jamaal Williams and Jace Sternberger, no one had more than one catch on the afternoon.
It’s clear the Packers have two quality options in the passing game, but there needs to be a third target on the outside. Fuller adds a vertical threat while also taking pressure off Adams in coverage. Although his production in Houston has been mixed since drafted in 2016, he’s hitting his stride at the right moment.
