NFL trade deadline: Biggest winners and losers
By Mike Luciano
The 2020 NFL Trade Deadline has come and gone without much activity
The 2020 NFL Trade Deadline figured to be the ideal time when contenders could make some blockbuster trades in order to sharpen up before the postseason draws near, but most of the hypothetical big trades fizzled out. The closest the league got to a blockbuster was a failed trade between the Packers and Texans centered around Will Fuller.
Still, some teams navigated the deadline with ease, while some made huge mistakes by not being aggressive enough.
Some teams nailed it at the 2020 NFL Trade Deadline, and some teams bizarrely sat on their hands
Winner: New Orleans Saints
The NFC South is looking more like a two-horse race by the day, as the Saints are likely on a collision course with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that will see the winner get division supremacy. The Saints saw the Buccaneers add Antonio Brown and decided to counter that acquisition with a bold trade of their own, pilfering Kwon Alexander from the San Francisco 49ers. A former LSU star and Pro Bowler in Tampa Bay, Alexander’s range and ferocity will serve a suspect Saints defense well in the winter months.
The Saints will be in salary cap hell next season, as they are currently an astonishing $92 million over the salary cap in a season that could see the cap shrink. However, 2020 is looking like Drew Brees’ swan song, and Loomis is doing everything he can to beef up the team around him as they go for broke in 2020. Alexander, who has two years left on his deal, might be able to stick around in New Orleans for 2021 as well, giving Dennis Allen a speedy, rangy tackle machine that could pair well next to Demario Davis.
