Josh Allen’s regression over the last month has to scare Bills fans
By Mike Luciano
Josh Allen has looked like a totally different quarterback over the last few weeks.
The Buffalo Bills looked almost unstoppable up until Week 5, as Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs kicked the passing game into overdrive. While Allen has confirmed he is a franchise quarterback this season, he isn’t playing at his All-Pro level from the first four games, and Buffalo has gone 2-2 in a month that could’ve easily gone 0-4.
While Allen was firmly in the MVP discussion after four games, he looks more like the player who was struggling mightily in the early part of his career over the last month. His completion percentage has dropped eight points, his passer rating is 43 points lower, and he has the same amount of interceptions as touchdowns.
Are Josh Allen’s struggles all his fault?
Allen has looked like an average quarterback over the last month, but there are several explanations for this dip, chief among then the better competition. The Chiefs and Titans, who are a combined 13-3 on the season, handled the Bills, and two divisional matchups against desperate teams also ate into the third-year signal caller’s production.
The running game has been all out of whack, as Zack Moss and Devin Singletary keep splitting carries behind one of Football Outsiders’ worst-ranked run-blocking offensive lines. While Allen has flourished in an offense that frequently empties the backfield and lets four wide receivers streak down the field, Buffalo has become a one-dimensional offense of late, and Allen has struggled to be as precise down the field.
Buffalo will likely end up in the postseason due to the fact they’re playing in one of the weakest divisions in the league. However, if they want to make any sort of extended run, Allen simply needs to be much better and stop turning the ball over against elite teams.
