The Mavericks finally got the hard part of roster construction done, as they unearthed a superstar in the mercurial Luka Doncic. The next step in keeping Dallas as a perennial playoff team is surrounding Doncic with secondary stars, one of which is already in town in Kristaps Porzingis. The Mavericks have already raided Slovenia and Latvia in order to find franchise cornerstones, and taking a trip to Italy by signing Gallinari could land an ascending team one of the best role players available on the market.

Versatility is the biggest father in Gallinari’s cap, as his shooting on the outside is paired with enough of a soft touch inside to play as a power forward or small ball center. While Gallinari could be an ideal tertiary scorer, Porzingis’ health issues mean that Rick Carlisle might force Gallinari to bang down low until the Latvian big returns to full health. Dallas might be in the market for a star that shines just a bit brighter than Gallinari, but he could be an excellent consolation prize given his pedigree.
