The Washington Football Team might win the division in 2020, but they could get a new QB this offseason.

The Washington Football Team’s 41-16 demolition of the Dallas Cowboys confirmed beyond a shadow of a doubt that this is a team capable of winning the NFC East and making it into the postseason. While that is certainly worth celebrating, Ron Rivera will need to make a very difficult decision at quarterback heading into next year. Dwayne Haskins has been relegated to the bench, Alex Smith is too gun-shy to challenge defenses down the field, and Kyle Allen is two inconsistent.

Rather than drafting a quarterback and going through growing pains, Rivera could add a veteran quarterback via free agency or a trade, and these three stand out as the best available.

These three veterans could end up as the starting QB in Washington in 2021

QB. Cam Newton. 47. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. 3. player. New England Patriots

Back when Newton was released in Carolina, many assumed that Washington was a natural destination given the fact that Rivera was already there and former QB coach Scott Turner was named the offensive coordinator. While Newton’s passing numbers with Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels are suspect, the fact that he has nine rushing touchdowns on the season and is still producing with a bunch of tomato cans at wide receiver should help him when he is looking for a starting job in 2021, be it in New England or elsewhere. Rivera is clearly comfortable with Newton, and Washington has more talent on the perimeter than New England.

Terry McLaurin is a bona fide star at wide receiver already, and Antonio Gibson went from seldom-used offensive weapon in college to a genuine bell-cow and touchdown machine. That skill position talent coupled with an offense and coaching staff that he knows like the back of his hand could help Newton recapture the mercurial form that stymied the league for the better part of a decade. Cam might not have a ton of options this offseason, but Rivera will always give him a chance to prove himself.
