Jets fired Gregg Williams, but somehow Adam Gase remains employed
After the implosion in lieu of getting their first win, the New York Jets part ways with defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.
Well, most people should have seen this coming on Monday morning.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the New York Jets have fired defensive coordinator Gregg Williams after their 0-12 start. On top of bad play-calling all season, it was the call heard around the NFL world that sent Williams packing with a pink slip.
In the closing seconds of a 28-24 lead Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders, Williams elected to call a Cover 0 action. It was an all-out blitz on Derek Carr, leaving his venerable secondary stuck to play in man coverage. The pressure couldn’t get to him, Carr found a matchup he liked and delivered a strike to rookie receiver Henry Ruggs III for a 46-yard touchdown with five seconds remaining on the clock.
With less than a minute left, the Jets looked to end their losing streak. One play set the Raiders moving to 7-5 with the 31-28 victory.
“I just felt like we could’ve been in a better call in that situation,” Jets safety Marcus Maye told reporters after the game.
Adam Gase however still remains employed
The writing is on the wall for the Jets staff entering the final four weeks of the 2020 NFL season. While Williams is gone, Adam Gase remains to be employed by gang green for at least another week.
There’s a difference between firing the man in command and a person who can take the blame. No question Sunday’s loss will be a lingering black spot on Williams’ up-and-down career, smudged in-between his role with “bounty gate” and the 5-3 record as the interim coach for the Cleveland Browns in 2018.
Sure, put the blame on Williams for costing the team a win with his reckless defensive play-calling, but let’s continue to look at Gase. Time and time again, it’s proven he’s the culprit of the dumpster fire that is the Jets offense. And while Dowell Loggins plays an excellent puppet, it’s clear who’s really talking it into reality.
At this point, the Jets have a plan in motion. Tank for Trevor Lawrence and begin fresh. It’s why Gase remains employed in Week 14 and Williams will be firing up his resume.
