Florida basketball: Keyontae Johnson in a medically-induced coma
By Mike Luciano
Keyontae Johnson is currently receiving medical care after his collapse on the court.
Any concerns or questions about the success of the Florida men’s basketball team on the court next season instantly became secondary to the health of star forward Keyontae Johnson, who collapsed in the middle of their game against Florida State. While Johnson was immediately sent to the hospital, the latest medical report doesn’t paint a very rosy picture of Johnson’s state at the moment.
The official Florida men’s basketball Twitter account tweeted out a statement in which they confirmed Johnson is in stable but critical condition. Per USA Today, Johnson is in a medically-induced coma.
Keyontae Johnson is the focal point of the Gators’ offense
A former Top 100 recruit, Johnson was considered a potential conference player of the year heading into the season. Johnson averaged 14.0 points and 7.1 rebounds per game last season and was putting up 16.0 points per game before his emergency. When he’s healthy, many are expecting him to be a first-round selection in the 2021 NBA Draft due to his versatility on both sides of the floor.
While some observers are trying to point the finger at COVID-19, as Mike White and the Gators had to shut down for a few days due to excessive positive tests, those details have not been released due to medical privacy issues. While myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle, is often associated with COVID-19, there is little certainty regarding a potential connection to Johnson and his sudden collapse.
We here at FanSided are sending out well wishes to Johnson and his family, as college basketball fans around the country unite behind Johnson while he fights through this.
