Rams QB Jared Goff getting surgery on thumb, playoff return hopeful

The Los Angeles Rams quarterback is unlikely to play in the regular-season finale against the Arizona Cardinals.

The Los Angeles Rams are on the verge of an important Week 17 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. If they win or the Chicago Bears lose to the Green Bay Packers, then they’re in the playoffs. But, they’ll have to play their game without starting quarterback Jared Goff.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Goff is undergoing surgery on his broken and dislocated right thumb on Monday night and expects to return for the playoffs. However, it’s unlikely he’ll be able to play in Week 17.

If Goff is unable to go, the Rams will have John Wolford start in his place.

Goff suffered injury while facing the Seahawks

The thumb injury occurred in the midst of Los Angeles’ game against the rival Seattle Seahawks, and it was gnarly to say the least. The Rams would lose 20-9, allowing the Seahawks to clinch the NFC West crown and forcing Los Angeles to participate in a pivotal Week 17.

Head coach Sean McVay will have to place his confidence in Wolford, who hadn’t attempted a single pass in the NFL. Wolford had previously played for the Arizona Hotshots of the Alliance of American Football, where he threw for 1,616 yards and 14 touchdowns in eight games.

Los Angeles likely won’t be alone in terms of starting quarterback woes, as the Cardinals are uncertain Kyler Murray will play in Week 17 due to a lower leg injury.
