Eagles looking for ‘Matthew Stafford type package’ in Carson Wentz trade

The Philadelphia Eagles could be ready to move off of Carson Wentz for good in the coming weeks. 

New Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni opened his press conference by stating how having two quarterbacks who could both start was a “good problem” for the Eagles entering the 2021 NFL offseason.

“We have two quarterbacks in Carson Wentz and Jalen Hurts that are top-notch quarterbacks. A lot of teams don’t have any,” Sirianni told reporters earlier this offseason. “So just really excited to work with both of them.”

However, that question might already be answered for him as soon as Saturday evening.

Wentz could be moved as early as next week from the Eagles, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen after a fallout during this season. Among the teams interested are the Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts.

Wentz, 27, is coming off his fifth NFL season in which he was benched toward the end of the year in favor the 2020 second-round pick. The year was a career-worst for the former No. 2 overall pick back in 2016, in which he threw a career-high in interceptions (15) and sacks taken (50).

How much is Wentz actually worth?

Entering the offseason, Wentz’s contract was deemed untradable by many. Instead, all that changed when the Detroit Lions traded Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams last week, receiving two first-round picks, a third-round pick and former franchise star Jared Goff.

Coincidentally enough, Goff was taken one pick before Wentz back in 2016.

According to Schefter, the Eagles are looking for “a Matthew Stafford package” in return for Wentz. That would mean at least one first-round selection would need to be in the deal, as would a mid-round selection former standout of the 2017 NFL season.

Of the two teams mentioned, Indianapolis could be more inclined to part ways with its first-round selection. The Colts won’t be losing much this offseason after finishing 11-5 in the race for the AFC playoffs. However, the team felt limited due to their overall quarterback play from the 38-year-old Philip Rivers.

Rivers, who signed a one-year, $25 million deal this offseason to join the Colts, retired following the team’s Wild Card loss to the Buffalo Bills. Should Indianapolis traded for Wentz’s services, they would be on the hook for guaranteed cap charges of $25.4 million in 2021 and $22 million in 2022.

Sirianni, who served as the Colts’ offensive coordinator under former Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich, has been noncommittal that Wentz would be the incumbent starter for Philadelphia in 2021. And after the Nick Foles fiasco over 2017 and 2018, it seems like the breakup was inevitable.

A fun stat crossed Twitter earlier this week. Of the 22 quarterbacks drafted from 2009-16, only one remains on the team that drafted them. That’s Wentz.

That stat is now a moot point, should this report be finalized before the start of the 2021 season.
