Packers: Aaron Jones comments on his free agency
The Green Bay Packers could be losing Aaron Jones to free agency, and he’s speaking out on the matter.
In the last two seasons, the Green Bay Packers went 26-6 overall. Their back-to-back 13-3 records propelled them to the top of the NFC charts and a trip to a pair of NFC Championship matchups.
It’s not about how you start, but rather how you finish. Both times the Packers couldn’t put together a four-quarter game plan, ultimately leading to a loss in Santa Clara against the San Francisco 49ers and at home to Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Free agency could make or break a roster each season, meaning the stars of the Pack Attack could be headed elsewhere. One name that has been the staple of Green Bay’s free agency is running back Aaron Jones. And although the position is becoming less valued in the open market, Jones is more than just your stereotypical three-down runner.
With the Super Bowl marking the end of the 2020 season, Jones will prep for negotiations. Everything right now remains unclear for the fourth-year back’s future, including where he will continue to be effective as both a runner and pass-catcher for the remainder of his career.
Jones still not sure where he will be playing moving forward
“It’s a lot of uncertainty right now with what’s going on,” Jones told CBS Sports on Friday. “You got a lot of great players in that locker room who all deserve to get paid. However it works out, it’s going to work out.”
Jones still is interested in returning to Lambeau to run it back with Aaron Rodgers, as he told FanSided earlier this week. Over the past two seasons, the former sixth-round pick has outshined his drat hype, finishing each year with over 1,000 rushing yards and at least 11 total touchdowns.
That production will be warranted in a backfield and also effective in the passing game. Teams will be interested in the right price in adding a dual-threat weapon coming off two seasons of highly productive years.
For now, Jones’ focus is on the offseason recovery rather than the offseason relocation.
“I haven’t really thought about playing with any other team,” Jones said. “I’m just depressing from the season, you know like taking a step back from the season. I’m just talking to my agent seeing how things are going to work out. I haven’t really thought about teams.”
There’s mutual respect from both the Packers and Jones following another year of success. The money will talk dividends over anything else. Green Bay used their second-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft to selected Boston College’s AJ Dillion as the potential replacement for both Jones and fellow free-agent Jamaal Williams.
Green Bay might be able to re-sign one of their two productive runners. The question is, which one?
