With tons of players and coaches already being made this offseason, when does the 2021 NFL free agency period actually begin?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers came out the victors of the NFL’s 2020 season after beating the reigning champion Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV last month. They were able to do so after one of the most impressive offseason and free agency periods in league history, turning Jameis Winston into Tom Brady and adding other all-time great players like Rob Gronkowski and Antonio Brown.

Other big pieces are being moved around the board already this offseason. Carson Wentz has landed in Indianapolis after essentially forcing his way out of Philly. J.J. Watt is still on the market after being released by the Houston Texans after 10 years. Deshaun Watson also hopes to be moved elsewhere and tons of rumors and speculation around other players like Von Miller are still swirling.

We’ve been into the offseason for a few weeks now but when do the real games begin? When does the 2021 NFL free agency period begin?

When does the 2021 NFL free agency period officially start?

This year’s free agency period will begin at 4 p.m. ET on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17.

However, between March 15-17 teams are allowed to make contact and negotiate with the agents of players who will become unrestricted free agents when free agency starts. This is known as the “legal tampering period.”

Some of the notable unrestricted free agents that will be available this year include Dak Prescott, Chris Godwin, Allen Robinson, and more.
