Does DeVonta Smith have a weight problem? Not if you watched him at Alabama
By John Buhler
DeVonta Smith has been told he is too small all his life, so this is nothing new for the former Alabama football star who is about to become a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Alabama football wide receiver DeVonta Smith was big enough to dominate the SEC, win a national championship and take back to Tuscaloosa a Heisman Trophy, so why is everybody freaking out about him weighing in at 170 pounds at his pro day?
Smith’s Heisman Trophy speech was all about telling undersized kids out there to go out and compete, no matter what anybody says about how small you are.
Fate would have it another slender wide receiver, Cincinnati Bengals legend Chad Johnson, came to his defense on Twitter Monday afternoon saying his slender frame won’t be a problem in the NFL.
Smith quote tweeted Johnson’s eloquent response with, “Talk to ’em Ocho!”
If any NFL team passes on DeVonta Smith for weighing 170, they’ll regret it
There are so many reasons why making a big deal about what Smith weighed at his pro day so incredibly dumb. One, he thoroughly dominated the best conference in college football last season. Two, Alabama went 10-0 in SEC play and played three other excellent teams en route to a national championship. And three, he is still in his early 20s and has time to put on weight at the NFL level.
There is no chance Smith is on the board past the San Francisco 49ers picking at No. 12. He could go as high No. 3 to the Miami Dolphins. Should teams like Miami, the Philadelphia Eagles picking at No. 6, the Detroit Lions picking at No. 7 or the New York Giants picking at No. 11 all decide to pass on him, that is their problem. Smith is the real deal, even at only 170 pounds soaking wet.
Smith’s 170-pound frame has not stopped him before, so why would it now as he enters the NFL?
