Oral Roberts fell just short of pulling off another epic March Madness upset but still managed to earn the respect of basketball fans across Twitter.

The run of historic upsets in March Madness nearly saw another double-digit seed find its way into the Elite Eight. Oral Roberts gave Arkansas everything it could handle in the Sweet 16, leading at the half and falling at the buzzer when Max Abmas’ game-winning three-point attempt bounced off the front rim.

The game was tied at 70 in the final minute before the Razorbacks took the lead on a jumper from Davonte Davis with 2.9 seconds to go. Oral Roberts called timeout and came up with a very well-designed sequence to give Abmas a good look at a three but the shot simply didn’t fall, marking a heartbreaking end to a true magic carpet ride for Paul Mills’ team.

A win would have made the Golden Eagles the first 15-seed to ever reach the Elite Eight and earn a shot at Baylor for a trip to the Final Four. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be, but college basketball fans across the Twittersphere took the opportunity to salute Oral Roberts for a tremendous run in March Madness.

The Golden Eagles were the last true Cinderella standing in the field but there are still significant underdogs alive in the NCAA Tournament. Oregon State reached the Elite Eight with a win over Loyola-Chicago this afternoon while 11-seed Syracuse can join them there by knocking off Houston in their Sweet 16 matchup tonight.
