Georgia football: Kirby Smart addresses wide receiver injuries during spring practice
By John Buhler
Georgia football fans are freaking out about the health of their wide receivers, and head coach Kirby Smart thinks Dawg Nation is blowing this completely out of proportion.
Georgia football head coach Kirby Smart gave a long-winded response on the health of his receiving corps after Saturday’s scrimmage.
“You guys have got to do your job but y’all certainly react to a lot of things,” said Smart after Saturday’s scrimmage. “I was disappointed at the way everything was handled. Jermaine Burton is fine. He has no structural damage. He was out there today doing exercises, doing conditioning, doing different things.”
“Jermaine Burton is going to be fine and for anybody to report the length of time he’s going to be out, that’s really unfair because if our doctor and our team doctor don’t know that, I don’t know how anyone else would. Because they would have seen the MRI, they would have seen the X-rays, and there’s nobody else who has seen that. So it’s unfair to put misinformation out there for sure.”
“Then with Arian today, he sprained his wrist and he should be fine. I don’t know if he’ll be back Monday. I don’t know that. They’re still doing the X-rays, but I know he sprained his wrist. So let’s don’t have a lot of overreaction if you don’t mind and hey, you ask me, I’ll tell you.”
“Jermaine hyperextended his knee. He’s day-to-day. That’s what it is. It’s not anything past that. But I don’t think we should sensationalize the other things because it’s all part of football. We had other guys get injured today and it’s a lot bigger deal when everybody writes, ‘oh, a receiver, another receiver is hurt.’ The receivers are going to be fine.”
Kirby Smart says Georgia football’s Jermaine Burton and Arian Smith will be fine
Georgia has already lost its best receiver in George Pickens for possibly the season with a torn ACL. Jermaine Burton hyper-extended his knee only a few practices later. And with Arian Smith spraining his wrist, the Dawgs are starting to run out of some wideouts. Keep in mind that Dominick Blaylock and Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint are working their way back from major injuries.
Overall, it seems as though the only major injury the Dawgs receiving corps has suffered this spring is the one to Pickens. Smart feels that Burton’s injury is a minor one and Smith’s is largely insignificant at this time. As long as they are good to go and Blaylock and/or Rosemy-Jacksaint can contribute in some capacity this season, the Dawgs’ receiving game should be just fine.
With JT Daniels in his second season in this offense, Georgia should not skip a beat this year.
