Packers: 1 2020 draft pick Matt LaFleur would like to take back

The Green Bay Packers 2020 draft didn’t yield immediate results, but they’d surely take back this pick more than any other.

Rather than draft someone from a loaded draft class at wide receiver in 2020, the Green Bay Packers traded up to take quarterback Jordan Love in the first round. Subsequent draft picks weren’t any better in terms of immediate help, as they reached the NFC Championship Game and lost a game short of the Super Bowl for a second straight year.

In a win-now window while Aaron Rodgers is still the quarterback, the Packers should enter this year’s draft with some sense of urgency to add people who can help right away. Whether that happens or not will be evaluated in the days after.

Love and second-round pick running back AJ Dillon will bump up one spot on the depth chart this year, after not playing at all and having one outstanding game respectively as rookies last year. With a case for both as the 2020 draft pick the Packers might like to take back, there’s one that’s even worse.

The Packers would take back this 2020 draft pick above any other

In the third round of last year’s draft, with the 94th overall pick, the Packers took Cincinnati tight end/h-back Josiah Deguara. That felt like a big reach, and since he was regarded as Day 3 pick it actually was a reach. The wide receivers who were still on the board (Gabriel Davis, Tyler Johnson, Darnell Mooney, etc.) makes it look even worse.

Deguara played in two games last year, with an ankle injury costing him time and then a torn ACL ending his season in October. He finished with one catch for 12 yards on two targets, all in Week 1.

To some degree, Deguara deserves an injury-related mulligan for his rookie campaign. But he’s still blocked on the depth chart by Robert Tonyan and Marcedes Lewis, so the Packers might not get much from him in 2021 either.
