Andre Drummond explains why everything is different with the Lakers

Andre Drummond has been on the Lakers for seven games now. He spoke about his new role on his new team to the media. What are his thoughts?

In case you were unaware, Andre Drummond is a member of the Los Angeles Lakers now. Before that, he wasn’t. His role prior to joining a contender was racking up regular 20 and 15 games on lower-level Eastern Conference teams while debate circled around him whether or not his style of play could contribute to winning in the current NBA.

Well, his teams didn’t win much, so that didn’t help, but he’s on a contender now. We’ll find out one way or another. Despite the Lakers being shorthanded, he seems to have spent the last couple of weeks looking to fit into a different type of role. He spoke about that transition here:

Judging body language is always fraught, but Drummond does not seem to be at all upset by settling into a role other than a number one option. In his words, “I’m here to just make this team better on both ends of the court — whatever they need me to do I’m trying to get the job done.” On a team with Anthony Davis and LeBron James, that is good. It’s also the bare minimum of reality, and reality is an important place to be.

After his buyout, Drummond’s move from Cleveland to the Lakers seemed quick, but that makes it easy to forget he had been sitting for about a month and a half beforehand. He is still getting himself back into game shape, so the Drummond on the court now may not be the Drummond we see in a month.

The role Andre Drummond is playing now will be further adjusted once LeBron James and Anthony Davis come back. We still haven’t seen this team at its best with all its players in the rotation. For now, he’s doing his best to hold down the fort. Hopefully, in a couple of weeks, he’ll get to start meshing with two of the best players in the world.
