5 teams who should trade for Julio Jones with Super Bowl in mind
The 49ers mortgaged some significant draft capital to move up from No. 12 to No. 3 in the draft, as Kyle Shanahan eyes a quarterback who can take his offense to a level Jimmy Garoppolo can’t. The healthy return of multiple key players this year makes them a sneaky contender to make a push back up the NFC standings, regardless of who the quarterback is.
From his two years (2015-2016) as the Falcons offensive coordinator, Shanahan is familiar with Jones. In 2015 Jones led the league in receptions (136), targets (203) and receiving yards (1,871), and over two seasons with Shanahan calling the plays he averaged just over 109 yards per game.
The 49ers’ wide receiver group is headlined by unique players (Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel), but they don’t have a coverage-dictating No. 1 guy. Even at a later stage of his career, Jones is that and his presence would create a scary-good offense if San Francisco gets the quarterback right.
King mentioned the Titans as a possible suitor for Jones. A.J. Brown is one of the best young wide receivers in the league, but losing three pass catchers (Jonnu Smith, Corey Davis, Adam Humphries) and only signing one (Josh Reynolds) has the talent around Ryan Tannehill looking a little thin.
The Titans followed a surprising run to the AFC title game in 2019 with a division title in 2020. Adding Jones would be a big step toward warding off the Colts in the AFC South, and keeping that recent success going.
