Eagles first-round selection in NFL Draft could surprise everyone
By Nick Villano
The Philadelphia Eagles could shake up the NFL Draft when their selection comes around at No. 12.
The Philadelphia Eagles have been pegged as an obvious destination for the best wide receiver available when they pick at 12th overall in Thursday night’s NFL Draft. The Eagles have needed wide receiver help in the worst way. They tried to fix it in traditional means, adding players like Alshon Jeffrey and DeSean Jackson, but somehow Travis Fulgham was the leading receiver last season with a paltry 539 yards.
What makes this even worse is the Eagles took Jalen Reagor with their first-round pick last season. He was a massive injury risk, and he was only able to play 11 games last season. He wasn’t able to break 400 yards on the season. Right after the Eagles selected Reagor, the Minnesota Vikings took Justin Jefferson, who broke a ton of rookie records last year.
Eagles could make a surprising selection at No. 12
The Eagles originally had the sixth-overall pick, which had them a team in the driver’s seat to take either Ja’Marr Chase, Devonta Smith, or Jalen Waddle. Then, they traded back to 12 with the Miami Dolphins as part of the deal that saw the San Francisco 49ers move up for the No. 3 overall pick.
While most think they have the Eagles pegged no matter where they pick, it seems they are looking to play 3D chess on draft night.
If you know the Eagles fanbase, they are going to deal with this news with a silent optimism and hope things work out for the best (we kid). Okay, this is actually going to go terribly and the fanbase is going to lose it.
Teams have reached for players in every single draft, but the Eagles roster is such a mess, that the team really should go for best player available. Jalen Hurts is probably the quarterback of the future. The skill players are very underwhelming. The offensive line was one of the worst in the league due to injuries last season. There’s a brand new coaching staff after the team walked away from the only Super Bowl-winning coach in franchise history, Doug Pederson.
Going off the board is a terrible idea for the Eagles. This isn’t the draft to do it, and this isn’t the time in their roster building to do it. They don’t need to look for the right fit. The Eagles need to find the best possible player at No. 12 and build around him.
However, it sounds like when the Eagles pick is announced by Roger Goodell, it could be the perfect time to pay attention to the reactions across social media.
