Packers replace one Ohio State center with another to protect Aaron Rodgers
By Mark Powell
Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst must really value Ohio State centers, as he selected Josh Myers to replace Corey Linsley.
Linsley left for the Los Angeles Chargers in free agency, meaning the Packers did have a pressing need at the center position. While fans and pundits clamor for the Packers to provide a weapon for Aaron Rodgers (finally), at the very least Gutekunst is trying to protect his aging quarterback. Josh Myers is a solid center with a Day 2 grade, meaning he should be ready to snap the ball to Rodgers right away, assuming the Packers don’t trade him before the Buckeye gets a chance.
Myers plays like a veteran, rather than an incoming rookie, meaning he’ll be ready to handle any and all audibles Rodgers or Jordan Love throw his way.
Josh Myers is a solid pick despite lack of flare for Packers
Myers is very solid in pass protection, staying alert and mobile enough to protect his quarterback. He can direct traffic at the line of scrimmage, adjusting protection packages as needed depending on how the defense lines up.
After starting his junior and senior seasons with the Buckeyes, Myers showed enough consistent production to earn a Day 2 selection. He’s not Elijah Moore, but the Packers didn’t have many options at the receiver or tight end positions when their number was called. Given the options available, this is a decent pick by Gutekunst as he tries to build the Packers 2021 roster and keep Rodgers happy in one full swoop.
