3 reasons Anthony Edwards should win Rookie of the Year
By Scott Rogust
1. Games played aside, Ant’s overall numbers are more than deserving
Regardless of how many games Ball has played or how hot Edwards has been since the start of March, the 2020 first overall pick’s season-long numbers are deserving of him winning Rookie of the Year honors.
Once Edwards grew out of his role as a bench player and into a starter, it paid dividends for the Timberwolves. Not only did he have the ability to score and put up dunks of the year, but he was savvy as a defender.
Through 68 games played, Edwards is averaging 18.9 points (first among rookies), 4.8 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.1 steals and 0.5 blocks per game while shooting 41.4 percent from the field and 32.6 percent from the 3-point line.
Yes, Edwards’ presence did not help the Timberwolves clinch a playoff spot in the tough Western Conference, but the rookie was simply sensational once he grew more comfortable and earned ample playing time. Taking his overall performance into consideration, Edwards should be considered the favorite to earn Rookie of the Year bragging rights.
