The irony behind Kelvin Benjamin switching to tight end on National Biscuit Day

ESPN’s Booger McFarland once said Kelvin Benjamin was a “Popeyes biscuit” away from being a tight end and Benjamin, on national biscuit day, finally made the switch.

Perhaps Kelvin Benajmin lives by the adage “no risk it, no biscuit” or maybe he felt inspired by Tim Tebow attempting to make an NFL comeback trying out as a tight end for the Jacksonville Jaguars. In any case, the 30-year-old athlete is switching from wide receiver to tight end in his latest attempt to make a comeback in the league.

The former first round draft pick was spotted working out as a tight end during the New York Giants rookie mini camp. The irony of it all is that Benjamin is switching to tight end on National Biscuit Day. And Twitter isn’t letting anyone forget what ESPN’s Booger McFarland said about Benjamin during a 2018 Monday Night Football broadcast, which he stated, Benjamin was “probably a Popeyes biscuit away from being a tight end.”

It is possible the Florida State alum could have the last laugh after all. The Giants offensive coordinator is Jason Garrett, and while he’s certainly never blow anyone away as a head coach in this league, one thing he is known for is involving tight ends in the passing game. With a strong offseason, Benjamin has an opportunity to contribute as a receiving tight end for the squad if this tryout eventually turns into a signing.

Any comeback story should be welcomed by the former wideout who has saw his career falter ever since he suffered a torn ACL in a non-contact preseason drill in 2015. To make matters worse, in his absence that 2015 season his quarterback Cam Newton had his career season. Ultimately, Newton was awarded the NFL MVP and the 15-1 Panthers made it down to Super Bowl 50.

Benjamin last played for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2018 after he cleared waivers when the Buffalo Bills cut ties with the wideout in December of that year. In three games with the Chiefs, he was targeted five times and had two catches for 26 yards.
