While it’s not the undisputed heavyweight boxing championship bout that many were looking forward to, the unbeaten Tyson Fury will still defend the WBC heavyweight championship for the first time this summer, completing a trilogy with the once-unbeaten and former WBC champion Deontay Wilder.

Fury-Wilder III is scheduled to take place on July 24 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV.

A press conference to formally announce the bout will take place on June 15 at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT. You can watch that press conference in the video player below:

It was once expected that Fury could meet WBA/IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua this summer with all four belts of boxing’s heavyweight crown on the line. Those plans were scrapped, however, when an arbitrator forced Fury to live up to a rematch clause in a previously signed agreement between him and Wilder.

Fury and Wilder first met in December 2018. It was a bout many people thought Fury was winning, and perhaps a bout he could have won, until Wilder scored two late knockdowns of Fury — the latter of which came in the 12th round and with a potential slow-count controversy.

There was no controversy in the second fight in February 2020, however. Fury whipped Wilder from pillar to post en route to a seventh-round TKO to win the championship and hand Wilder his first defeat.

The trilogy bout had been rumored to take place at some point in 2020 as well but faced several pushbacks and delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Like the second bout, this championship contest will be co-promoted by Bob Arum’s Top Rank Boxing (co-promoters to Fury) and Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions (promoter of Wilder) and broadcast on pay-per-view.
