Without Aaron Rodgers in attendance at Green Bay Packers mini camp, head coach Matt LaFleur sent a message to back quarterback Jordan Love.

Rodgers remains in a very public feud with the Packers front office, so mini camp opened without him there. It was long expected Rodgers would be skipping out on what’s a mostly-voluntary activity anyway.

In his place, backup and 2020 first-round pick Jordan Love got the starting snaps. While the reviews have largely been positive regarding Love’s time under center, LaFleur made sure to make one concept very clear to his young quarterback.

While he expects Rodgers to be under center come Week 1, Love shouldn’t get too comfortable holding a clipboard.

“You are only 1 play away so you have to prepare like you are the starter…,” LaFleur told the Utah State product.

The best backup quarterbacks are always ready to step in. While they might not be as talented as some of their counterparts, they’re never overwhelmed in the big moment. Look no further than former Eagles backup QB Nick Foles, who was ready when Carson Wentz went down.

The backup should serve as a calming presence for the rest of the offense. Love has the talent to handle the Packers’ system. He should know the playbook front and back, and while he can’t make the same ludicrous plays Rodgers can, he’s still capable enough to lead a successful drive while No. 12 is out.

Mini camp is good practice for this. Rodgers is nowhere to be found, and Love has his full support, as well as the coaching staff’s. He’s under pressure from the fans and organization to step in admirably for a future Hall of Famer.

If he takes LaFleur’s advice to heart, he should be ready when his moment comes.
