Yankees pull off another 5-4-3 triple play to give Aroldis Chapman the save and take the rubber game against the Oakland Athletics.

It’s a rarity to see a team pull off a triple play in a season. It’s unbelievably rare to see two triple plays by a team in that span. But three? Now we’re talking dead-ball era stuff.

But the Yankees managed to just pull off such a feat, scoring the third triple play of their 2021 campaign. This ties the 2016 Chicago White Sox for an MLB record.

Even more insane, it’s their second triple play of the week, and this one managed to cap off a 2-1 victory over the Oakland A’s at home.

The Yankees were down for most of the game thanks to a Matt Olson home run in the top of the first.

But the team had come back in the bottom of the sixth, with Clint Frazier and Aaron Judge scoring on a Gary Sanchez double.

Aroldis Chapman came out for the save in the top of the ninth but walked Jed Lowrie and Tony Kemp to put the first two men up in the inning on base.

With Sean Murphy up, and with a 1-0 count, Murphy sent a ground ball to third baseman Gio Urshela, who stepped up on the bag to get Lowrie and threw it to second baseman DJ LeMahieu to nail Kemp.

LeMahieu then sent it over to Chris Gittens at first to win the game and send everyone into a frenzy.

The Yanks had already turned a triple play just a few days earlier, taking advantage of terrible baserunning by the Toronto Blue Jays to pull off a bizarre, unique triple play never seen before in the game.

The first triple play of the year for New York came last month against the White Sox, pulling off another around-the-horn 5-4-3 play.

With the win today over Oakland, the Yankees took two out of three games, giving the A’s their first road series loss of the season.
