It’s the anniversary of the day Mike Tyson bit Evander Holyfield’s ear off (Video)

24 years ago today, former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson sent the world into a tailspin when he bit Evander Holyfield’s ear twice during their rematch.

Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield were two of the famous athletes, let alone boxers, of the late 1990s. So much so that both men faced off against one another twice during the decade. Tyson had just come off a stint in prison while Holyfield was dominating the heavyweight division that Tyson once reigned when they first faced off in 1996.

Tyson and Holyfield had a back and forth war that ended in an 11th round TKO for Holyfield, which was one of the biggest upsets of that era. Eventually, the two men would run it back a year later on June 28, 1997, which is a date that will live in infamy forever.

When did Mike Tyson bite Evander Holyfield’s ear off?

Tyson and Holyfield slugged it out for three rounds as Tyson was unable to find his footing that once made him the most dangerous force that the boxing world had seen to that point.

With under a minute to go in round three, Tyson, who was visibly frustrated, bit Holyfield’s ear off before chaos ensued inside the ring. After two points were taken away from Tyson’s foul, the fight would eventually restart. A few seconds later, closer to the end of the round, Tyson committed the infraction again, and the fight was ruled a disqualification for Tyson.

On the 24-year anniversary, Rex Chapman, among other celebrities, shared the moment that had the world in a frenzy. If social media had been around in 1997, we can only guess how much bigger the moment might have been. Unfortunately, though, the world will never know.

Tyson and Holyfield would eventually retire from boxing after the incident and have since made peace about the ordeal.
