After a brief tease due to an inaccurate initial report, it turns out a Mike Tyson vs. Evander Holyfield exhibition trilogy bout is NOT going down … yet.

It’s seemed like ever since Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr.’s exhibition boxing contest promoted by Triller in November that a similar exhibition could be used for a trilogy bout between Tyson and fellow former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield nearly 25 years in the making.

In fact, the boxing world appeared to blow up when Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports tweeted that Tyson-Holyfield 3 was on as an exhibition contest, similar to Tyson vs. Jones.

But just minutes later, Iole tweeted out a correction, stating that it would instead be Holyfield facing Kevin McBride, not Tyson, in an exhibition bout. Iole attributed the mistake to misunderstanding his source, not being given inaccurate information.

Unlike the Tyson-Jones bout, and in spite of Holyfield’s legend status, this will not be a pay-per-view headliner, but rather a pay-per-view co-main event. Holyfield-McBride will serve as the main support for the upcoming Teofimo Lopez vs. George Kambosos Jr. undisputed lightweight title bout presented by Triller.

No date is official, but the card with Lopez-Kambosos Jr. and Holyfield-McBride is expected to take place on either May 29 or June 5.

Perhaps there is a chance we could still see Mike Tyson vs. Evander Holyfield 3 at some point?

This will be the 58-year-old Holyfield’s first time competing in a boxing ring since a 10th-round TKO of Brian Nielsen on May 7, 2011.

The 47-year-old McBride, meanwhile, last fought on July 29, 2011, suffering a fourth-round knockout at the hands of Mariusz Wach. McBride lost six of his last seven fights.

McBride is the final man to have fought Tyson professionally, defeating the former undisputed heavyweight champion via six-round retirement on June 11, 2005.

Tyson vs. Holyfield in an exhibition trilogy bout has been rumored for a while now, but negotiations, including ones between Tyson and Triller, seem to get in the way.

Should Holyfield get the win over McBride and feel good, however, perhaps there is a chance we can see Tyson-Holyfield 3 and give Tyson a chance to avenge his two heavyweight title fight losses to Holyfield, including the infamous “bite fight.”
