Indians steal potential Yasmani Grandal replacement from White Sox

The Cleveland Indians signed former New York Mets and Detroit Tigers catcher Wilson Ramos to a minor-league contract.

Even though the Chicago White Sox have had great success through the first three months of the season, they have not had the greatest luck in terms of player health. Matters only got worse for the White Sox on Tuesday, as catcher Yasmani Grandal is out for the next four-to-six weeks after tearing a tendon in his left knee during Monday night’s game against the Minnesota Twins. If they were, by chance, looking for a catcher on the open market, they can cross one name off the list.

The Cleveland Indians announced that they have signed former New York Mets and Detroit Tigers starting catcher Wilson Ramos to a minor league contract, where he will report to Triple-A Columbus.

After playing two seasons with the Mets, Ramos signed on with the Tigers on a one-year, $2 million contract. Ramos’ stint lasted a little less than two months, as he slashed .200/.238/.392 while recording six home runs, 13 RBI, 12 runs scored and 24 hits through 35 games (120 at-bats). Additionally, Ramos was placed on the injured list twice due to a lumbar spine strain.

As for the White Sox, their injury woes continue to haunt them. Eloy Jimenez tore his pectoral muscle in spring training and there is still no timetable for his return, Luis Robert is currently sidelined due to a hip injury, and second baseman Nick Madrigal is done for the season after undergoing surgery on his right hamstring. Now, they have Grandal out for over a month due to a torn tendon in his knee.

With Grandal out, the team is sending out Zack Collins as their starter behind home plate. Collins recorded a .225 batting average, a .696 OPS, three home runs, 19 RBI, 14 runs scored and 27 hits. The White Sox called up Seby Zalvala from Triple-A to fill the roster spot left by Grandal. Zalvala is slashing .178/.291/.339 while recording five home runs and 15 RBI through 33 games in Triple-A.
