If Ed Orgeron is fired, here are 5 realistic options LSU could hire to replace him
Stoops has been out of college coaching since suddenly stepping down at Oklahoma in June of 2017. But his name remains a prominent one, and he came back to coaching as head coach/general manager of the Dallas Renegades in the XFL before the latest rendition of that league was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Stoops has stepped in to replace Urban Meyer on FOX’s college football studio shows. There’s certainly comfort and plenty of money (not to mention less stress) in working as an analyst every Saturday. But even if it was “only” the XFL at that point in time, he clearly has the itch to coach. He’s still a relatively young man, coming up on his 61st birthday this week, and his long tenure at Oklahoma proves he can handle the expectations of a big-time coaching job.
As long as his health is good and he doesn’t squash any speculation, Stoops will be easy to tie to almost any notable college head coaching opening by season’s end. LSU will aim high in a search to replace Orgeron, and their list will surely include Stoops if it comes to it.
