Gerrit Cole was first out of dugout in near-brawl with Mets

New York Yankees’ pitcher Gerrit Cole was the first out of the dugout following a bench and bullpen-clearing brawl with the New York Mets. 

New York Yankees‘ pitcher Gerrit Cole is known for a lot of things — top pitcher in the AL and MLB All-Star, just to name a couple. After last night’s game against the New York Mets, he’s now known as the first person out of the Yankees dugout as the benches and bullpens cleared.

After Yankees’ outfielder Giancarlo Stanton hit a two-run home run to tie the game, 6-6, in the bottom of the seventh inning, an altercation ensued. Stanton paused his home run trot after touching second base and shared a few words with Mets’ shortstop Francisco Lindor. Stanton continued his jog towards home plate, but not without chaos. Both benches and bullpens emptied in a heated Subway Series rivalry.

Cole wasn’t worried about protecting his million-dollar arm as he hopped the Yankees’ dugout fence while Stanton and Lindor went back-and-forth.

Following a 7-6 Mets win to conclude the weekend’s Subway Series, Lindor shared his speculation that the Yankees are whistling as a means to steal signs. Cole isn’t new to this type of controversy as he was a member of the Houston Astros during the later half of the 2017-18 season when it felt as if the organization was crashing and burning following its own sign-stealing scandal.

Perhaps that’s why Cole was the first to emerge from the Yankees dugout. He knows firsthand the implications of stealing signs and what it means for the credibility of an organization.

Most recently, Cole was accused of using foreign substances to enhance his performance on the mound. His nine-year, 324 million dollar contract with the Yankees is proof that he’s one of the best pitchers in the game. His background speaks for itself.

The Yankees are dealing with enough struggles of their own at the moment. If they have been stealing signs, it hasn’t been going well for them. It seems a bit far-fetched, but one thing’s for certain and it’s that Cole’s intensity on the mound isn’t the only thing that players have to watch out for.
