Cardinals’ Adam Wainwright trolls Mets over 2006 NLCS loss
St. Louis Cardinals’ pitcher Adam Wainwright trolls New York Mets with a flashback to the 2006 NLCS.
As if the New York Mets haven’t had to deal with enough struggles lately, St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright brought up the pain that was the 2006 NLCS for the Mets.
Ironically enough, St. Louis beat New York on Monday night, 7-0. Perhaps it was an homage to the Cardinals beating the Mets in seven games 15 years ago? Wainwright couldn’t have used a more opportune moment to troll New York.
Wainwright brings up a bases-loaded blast from the recent past
In Wainwright’s fifth straight start, the Cardinals blanked the Mets and he made sure to take a jab at New York postgame.
Adam Wainwright, recounting his bases-loaded strikeout of Jeff McNeil in the first inning: "I like nostalgia, and I felt Mets fans in a bases-loaded situation wanted to see me throw two curveballs and a changeup ... I gave the people what they wanted."

It was Oct. 19, 2006, whenever the Mets fell to the Cardinals in a heartbreaking Game 7 and Wainwright isn’t ready to let that memory go. And for good reason. Wainwright saved that game and caught Carlos Beltran looking at the plate with a curveball for the third strike. Not to mention, the bases were loaded and Wainwright secured a 3-1 victory for the Cardinals.
Look away, New York, but let’s not forget that St. Louis went on to win the World Series that year.
After once leading the NL East this season, the Mets have a 4.2 percent chance of making it to the postseason. Perhaps the one thing that New York wants more than being able to continue playing deep into October is to see 40-year-old Wainwright retire. However, that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen anytime soon, at least not in 2022.
Please, Wainwright, you’ve done enough. Spare the Mets.
