Dear Florida State, fire Mike Norvell and hire Deion Sanders already

Florida State and Deion Sanders feels like a perfect match, and an ESPN analyst expects it to happen.

Florida State fell to 0-2 on the season with last Saturday’s loss to Jacksonville State, the program’s first loss to an FCS program since that label has existed. Head coach Mike Norvell offered a fireable excuse for the Seminoles’ defense on the game-winning hail mary. To say Norvell is on the hot seat is an understatement.

Deion Sanders is in his second season as head coach at Jackson State, with a 2-0 record heading into Saturday night’s game against Louisiana-Monroe. Among a list of candidates to replace Norvell, the former Florida State defensive back and Pro Football Hall of Famer is an easy one.

It’s safe to say Sanders is answering any questions about his ability or desire to coach. ESPN’s ‘Booger’ McFarland had those questions, but no longer.

“I was very skeptical about whether or not Deion wanted to coach,” McFarland said. “But he’s shown that he wants to do all the work. Yes, he’s still flashy. He’s still Coach Prime. And I think that as he gets more experience, he will continue to know when he can be Coach Prime, and when he has to be the coach of X, Y, Z — whatever that school is, because there’s a difference.”

Is it inevitable Deion Sanders will coach Florida State?

On “The ESPN College Football Podcast with Kevin Negandhi this week, McFarland posed a question.

“Doesn’t it almost feel like Florida State and Deion Sanders are on a collision course?”

Negandhi agreed.

“Exactly!” Negandhi said.

McFarland went to say he wouldn’t be surprised if “in the next year or two” the move was made by Florida State to hire Sanders. Seminoles’ fans are probably saying, “why wait so long?” Waiting until the season is over, as Sanders won’t leave Jackson State until then, would technically be within the next year like McFarland opined. But if Norvell can’t turn things around this year, and there aren’t many signs he will, he may not be on the trip back from Gainesville after the regular-season finale against Florida on Nov. 27.

Sanders and Florida State look like a perfect match. A former alum with credibility and a budding acumen as a coach would come back to Tallahassee to spark and turn around the football program. If (when?) Norvell is fired and Sanders is willing to entertain it, the pairing indeed feels inevitable.
