Vladimir Guerrero Jr. doesn’t care about the triple crown
Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. makes it clear he’s more focused on taking his team to the playoffs than winning individual titles.
With an MVP bid within reach and a Triple Crown within his sights, it would make sense if Blue Jay Vladimir Guerrero Jr. concentrated on the historic season he’s having thus far.
But a team player to his core, Guerrero revealed that he has a separate goal in mind: just taking his beloved Blue Jays to the playoffs.
Signed within the organization since 16 years old, the 22-year-old Guerrero Jr. is a key part of a Blue Jays rebuild that has the powerful team in the thick of a competitive Wild Card race.
Toronto Blue Jay Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is not concerned with Triple Crown or MVP race
The Blue Jays are one of five teams vying for one of two remaining AL Wild Card slots. Over the next week, the Jays will have to outperform the Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees, the Seattle Mariners and the Oakland Athletics — and there’s still a possibility of a five-way tie.
According to FiveThirtyEight, the Blue Jays currently have a 42 percent chance of making playoffs and a long shot 2 percent chance of winning the World Series, which would be the cherry on top if Guerrero Jr. does manage a Triple Crown and MVP win.
Interestingly enough, many MLB analysts argue that Guerrero Jr.’s MVP candidacy rests on whether or not he can take his team to the playoffs. And if Guerrero Jr. finds a way to take the Jays to the top of the five-team AL Wild Card dogpile, he’ll get all he ever wanted and an MVP win to boot.
