Ben Simmons’ Instagram activity is a massive slap in the face to 76ers
Ben Simmons continues to troll the 76ers — yhis time he does it by liking an Instagram post about how much the team can fine him if he continues to hold out.
There are so many takes on the Ben Simmons and Philadelphia 76ers rift but if you fancy some petty humor, then it might be best to just grab a large bucket of popcorn and watch this slugfest play out.
Simmons, 25, has made it clear that he will never play for the 76ers again. To his obvious chagrin, he’s been bashed, blamed and disparaged by not only opposing fans and media but Philadelphia fans and even members of his team. It’s a situation that he, like most people, would loathe having to return to. And he’s willing to lose a lot of money for it.
He knows this and even liked an Instagram graphic that displayed how much he’ll likely be fined if he continues to withstand the 76ers before he’s traded.
Ben Simmons is burning every bridge in sight
Unlike most people, Ben can laugh about squandering that much money because he’s made over three times that amount in his career (per spotrac.com) and he knows by the time the 76ers can start fining him, they would have already paid him half of his salary for the year.
According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the 76ers can fine the disgruntled Simmons $227,000 for every day he misses — $1.3 million a week. However, because of a pay clause in his current 5-year, $177 million contract, Simmons was paid 25 percent of his contract on July 1 and owed another 25 percent today, Oct. 1.
If Philadelphia paid Ben today, that means he’s made $16,501,968 of his $33,003,936 salary for the year and he has yet to step into training camp. The remaining half is meant to be dispersed over the next 12 months, this is what he stands to lose if he is fined.
But it seems like the 76ers can fine him all they want because Simmons seems content on losing bread as long as it means he can get out of Philadelphia.
