Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley prevented quarterback Caleb Williams from being interviewed following the Red River Showdown.

Oklahoma Sooners fans were clamoring for freshman quarterback Caleb Williams to get the start over Spencer Rattler throughout the season. After Rattler once again struggled to get anything going, head coach Lincoln Riley benched him and sent out Williams. Sure enough, that changed the Sooners’ luck and helped the team win 55-48 over the Texas Longhorns in the Red River Showdown on Saturday.

After the game, ESPN reporter Holly Rowe revealed in a tweet that she had requested to interview Williams, but the Sooners head coach said no.

Lincoln Riley may have quarterback controversy with Caleb Williams, Spencer Rattler

Why Riley made that decision remains to be seen.

Regardless, the Sooners do have a quarterback controversy on their hands. Rattler did not play up to expectations throughout the season, causing Oklahoma fans to chant “We want Caleb” in games. But after fumbling the ball in the first half, causing Texas to score a touchdown three plays later to extend their lead to 35-17, Riley made the decision to bring in Williams for the remainder of the game.

Williams shined after entering in relief of Rattler, as he threw for 212 yards and two touchdowns while completing 64.0-percent of his passes (16-of-25). Additionally, Williams ran for 88 yards and a touchdown on four carries.

Oklahoma fans will be celebrating this win for quite some time. But, they can’t help but wonder what Riley will do at the quarterback position for next weekend’s game against the TCU Horned Frogs. Will Williams earn the starting role? Or will Rattler return under center?
