Did Ozzie Albies and the Braves get screwed over on so-called error?
Ozzie Albies had what appeared to be an easy out and potential double play but he dropped the ball and everyone was ruled safe. Did the Braves get screwed?
Game 2 was not going well for the Atlanta Braves in almost every capacity. The Astros jumped on them early and they couldn’t get much of anything going thereafter.
Looking to try and keep the bleeding at bay in the bottom of the sixth, there was a groundball to Dansby Swanson that appeared like it could result in a double play if they made the turn quickly with Ozzie Albies covering second base.
Swanson made a nice play but, after the throw hit Albies in the glove, it appeared as if he mishandled the transfer. But instead, the umpires ruled that he never had possession of the catch (shouts to the NFL) and all runners were safe.
Did Ozzie Albies make the play and the Braves get screwed out of an out?
Frankly, it’s hard to tell whether or not Ozzie Albies did have possession of the ball.
Because the call on the field was an error, it stands to reason that the umpire crew stood with that call as the video offers nothing conclusive to overturn it.
With that said, there is at least a chance that the Braves and fans have a legitimate gripe with the call. It’s entirely possible that it was the transfer that caused the ball to hit the dirt. Alas, we’ll never know that definitively, so Atlanta and Albies have to live with the error and tighten up to prevent anything like that from happening again.
