Unfortunately for Michigan State football fans, the Spartans don’t have a Heisman winner to brag about (yet).

The Heisman Trophy is the most prestigious award a college football player could possible receive. It’s the one that starts a seemingly endless amount of discussions and arguments and it’s one award that a Michigan State Spartans football player has yet to claim.

That’s right, unfortunately for the Spartans, there is no Heisman Trophy history for them to celebrate.

Michigan State has an above average football program historically. The Spartans have won more than 60 percent of their games all time, have played in 29 bowl games, have claimed 11 conference championships and stake a claim on five national titles (with the most recent being in 1966). This is a program that has made it to the College Football Playoffs, an accomplishment most others are unable to claim.

But the Heisman has eluded the Spartans.

Michigan State football: Has a Spartans player ever won the Heisman Trophy?

All that said, just because a Michigan State player hasn’t won the Heisman Trophy in the past doesn’t mean a current member of the Spartans can’t compete for the prestigious award this season.

Kenneth Walker III is in the midst of a remarkable year and his accomplishments should be acknowledged.

Prior to his performance against the Michigan Wolverines, Walker had run for nine touchdowns and 997 yards on 152 carries through seven games. Against Michigan, Walker exploded, running for 197 yards and five touchdowns on just 23 carries.

As he performs like that, Walker continues to elevate the Spartans into a very enviable position. And if he continues to thrive, while the Spartans continue to succeed, the Michigan State running back should be in position to claim the Heisman Trophy by the time this season wraps up.
