TCU football: 5 replacements for Gary Patterson with the Horned Frogs
By Ethan Lee
3. Kendal Briles
Nobody should really endorse hiring his father, but plenty of people will be interested in Kendal Briles being a head coach sooner rather than later. Though he will be under plenty of scrutiny, and rightfully so given his connections to Baylor, Briles has proven he’s a competent offensive coordinator who can be innovative in the offenses he designs.
Arkansas has found plenty of success with Briles’ schemes and that sort of offense might be beneficial to have in Fort Worth. TCU should consider his past before just jumping at the opportunity to hire him, but the Horned Frogs should really do that with any and all candidates, including the next one.
2. Jeff Lebby
A Texas native and a brilliant mind when it comes to leading offenses, what’s not to like about Ole Miss offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby? Well, like the aforementioned Briles, he was also at Baylor during one of the worst scandals in all of college football, so that’s not great.
Lebby has bounced around since leaving Baylor in 2016 and has ended up finding a home in Oxford, MS. His offense is arguably the biggest reason why the Rebels are winning so much right now.
1. Sonny Dykes
Let’s take a look at someone who really isn’t all that far away from TCU’s campus. SMU Mustangs head coach Sonny Dykes has done a marvelous job of bringing transfer players to Dallas and winning at a high level.
In less than five full seasons at SMU, Dykes has been able to go 29-15, including a 10-3 season in 2019 and a 7-3 season in 2020. His team is off to a 7-1 start this season. His offenses are consistently impressive and he knows how to coach and recruit in Texas. He’d be a great fit at TCU, assuming he’d ever entertain leaving his current job, that is.
