Dan Mullen and the Florida football team had a bad time on Saturday, as the Gators trailed the FCS Samford Bulldogs 42-35 at halftime.
The Dan Mullen era of Florida football could be coming to an end in a matter of hours, as the Gators trailed the FCS Samford Bulldogs 42-35 at halftime.
After winning the SEC East a year ago and playing in yet another New Year’s Six bowl, Florida entered play on Saturday at a dismal 4-5 on the season. The Gators have lost three games in a row and would need to beat Missouri and in-state rival Florida State to achieve bowl eligibility at 6-6. All the while, Florida’s rivals and the college football media epically trolled them over it.
It does not matter how much Tim Tebow believes in you, Florida has to make a change at head coach by the end of the season or else.
Dan Mullen contract buyout: How much do the Gators have to play?
For Florida to get rid of Mullen, it would only take $12 million to do so, as his buyout is not that steep.
This is the most points that Florida has allowed in a game against an FCS opponent since the FBS/FCS split in 1978. pic.twitter.com/YlQsQl68sZ

Samford paid $525,000 to play at Florida today. Ironically, that will work out to $1 for every yard Samford gains against Gators.

Samford 42
Florida 28

AGAINST SAMFORD
IN THE FIRST HALF
This is an all-timer from Florida.
All of FSU Twitter is currently hunting for receipts of Gator fans who made fun of them for losing to an FCS team.

While the on-field performance has been brutal of late, the manner in which Kirby Smart and the Georgia football program are eating the Gators’ lunch in recruitment is borderline unforgivable.
I had seen some shit. Samford dropping 42 in the first half on Florida is new.

#Gators D has turned Liam Welch into Joe Burrow.

This is a team that’s quit on its coach. This is a coach that’s lost control of his program. This is a program that’s lost the Faith of its fans.

It’s time to fire @CoachDanMullen and @ScottStricklin
Some stats from Samford's first-half lead over Florida:
— Chris Hummer (@chris_hummer) November 13, 2021
- This is the first time Florida has EVER allowed 42 points in a half.
- Samford averages 36.8 points per game. It has 42 now.
- Samford scored 0 points the last time it played an FBS opponent (Auburn in 2019)
-
All the while, what the college football world is seeing in Gainesville is crystal-clear evidence that the Florida football team has given up on its head coach and vice versa.
Samford scoring 42 in the first half on Florida feels like the beginning of the end for Dan Mullen. Most points an opponent has ever scored against Florida in the first half.

Dan Mullen is really getting fired today, huh?

Maybe Dan Mullen was getting a jump start on "recruiting season" this week

Mullen will find work elsewhere next season, but this was one unexpected crash and burn effort of a season down in Gainesville. Expect the saddest rendition of Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down” to be played at Ben Hill Griffin before the entire athletic department and the boosters have to make a big, yet incredibly easy decision.
Potentially needing to beat Florida State to reach bowl eligibility is the sign of a season gone awry.
