25 most iconic sports photos from Getty Images this week

The sports world makes for a beautiful palette but individual images can get lost in the constant shuffle. Here are the most iconic sports photos from Getty Images this week.
Evan Fournier of the New York Knicks celebrates after scoring during the second quarter against the Philadelphia 76ers at Wells Fargo Center on November 8, 2021, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
I’ve been in Philly less than a year, but the I-95 NBA matchups are something special, especially once you include fans. The Philadelphia 76ers had a six-game winning streak before the New York Knicks came to town and the atmosphere was great despite being a couple of weeks into the new season. During a game, I’m often looking for photos that show some sort of tension or action and reaction. Now that we’re back on the floor covering games there are some pictures that can have a stronger impact while also keeping the background of the photo clean, like this one.

Peres Jepchirchir of Kenya celebrates as she crosses the finish line giving her the win of the Women’s division of the 2021 TCS New York City Marathon in Central Park on November 07, 2021 in New York City.
It was great to cover the New York City Marathon after missing it last year due to Covid-19. Also, the fact that it was the 50th running of it this year. It was a perfect fall day in New York as Peres Jepchirchir emerged from the pack and was overcome with joy as she crossed the finish line. Three months ago in Tokyo, Jepchirchir won Olympic gold in the marathon, so it was special to see her victorious once again.

Daniel Hemric, driver of the No. 18 Poppy Bank Toyota, celebrates with a backflip after winning the NASCAR Xfinity Series Championship at Phoenix Raceway on November 6, 2021, in Avondale, Arizona.
As a photographer, it’s not every day you’re afforded the opportunity to redeem yourself after missing “the shot” from a sporting event that took place earlier in your career. As the laps counted down for Daniel Hemric on his first NASCAR Xfinity Series win and championship in Phoenix, I started hearing chatter on the radio about a celebratory back-flip — a celebration we haven’t seen since Carl Edwards retired in 2017. Thankfully, I knew I’d be able to get out on the track to attempt to redeem myself after all these years. Once the black and white flag dropped, it all became a bit of a blur as it happened so fast.
I recall running back and forth at the front stretch wall behind the other photographers because Hemric decided to celebrate with a burnout on each side of the finish line, not giving me an idea where he would stop and exit his car. I captured a few burnout frames but forfeited some in order to relocate and put myself as close to his car as I possibly could once the burnout was over. This proved to be key in being the only organization to end up with this angle.
As he climbed from the car, I was able to squeeze through his team members in time to grab focus as he was checking his landing area. And as soon as he was up there, he was down again. I ducked out of the middle of the huddle to allow room for their celebration and continued to document. It took over ten years, but I finally got my redemption backflip shot.

Brendan Perlini of the Edmonton Oilers collides with Ryan McLeod and Brandon Carlo of the Boston Bruins and Matt Grzelcyk during the second period at TD Garden on November 11, 2021, in Boston, Massachusetts.
I made this image during the Boston Bruins game against the Edmonton Oilers in Boston. It stood out to me because most hockey plays are between two players. One defending another down ice, one checking another into the boards, etc. Here we see four players colliding in a chaotic scene. I like this frame because it reminds me of how many elements are involved in hockey. The players are such skilled skaters, but on occasions like this I’m reminded of just how crazy it is that they’re moving so quickly and changing direction so precisely all on thin blades.

Isabella Wright of Team USA skis during Super G Training at Copper Mountain Resort on November 10, 2021, in Copper Mountain, Colorado.
I shot this photo of Isabella Wright during one of the U.S. Alpine Ski Team Media Days held at Copper Mountain Resort in Colorado. To get into position to shoot this photo during Super G Training, I skied into position on the racecourse that featured a fall line and terrain where the athletes would certainly be catching air. The position wasn’t ideal as the background was cluttered with a mix of B-net, coaches and snow-making equipment. After tracking a couple of ski racers off the jump, I was able to find a safe position to shoot through a “keyhole” to catch the ski racers in a full tuck position flying through the air with a clean background. I utilized a slow shutter speed and a panning technique to blur the background while keeping the subject in perfect focus. This technique also helps convey a sense of speed to show the intensity of Alpine ski racing. All the credit goes to Wright for hitting the jump in perfect form allowing all the elements to come together into a fun photograph to capture.
