Florida coaching candidates: 7 most likely replacements for Dan Mullen
By John Buhler
The Florida football program has plenty of options to replace former head coach Dan Mullen.
With a disastrous 5-6 record, the Florida football team has fired former head coach Dan Mullen.
This was Mullen’s fourth year back in Gainesville. While the former offensive coordinator under Urban Meyer had success initially, it hit the fan this fall. Florida has not beaten a Power Five opponent since defeating Vanderbilt over a month ago. After losing to Missouri in overtime, the Florida administration had seen enough. The Gators must win next week Saturday to go bowling.
Fortunately, the Gators have a wide array of worthy candidates to explore replacing Mullen with.
Florida coaching candidates: Who could replace Dan Mullen in Gainesville?
Dave Clawson is an excellent head coach, but Florida is a really big job for him
There is no denying what Dave Clawson has meant for Wake Forest football. The smallest school in the ACC is now a regular staple in bowl season. The Demon Deacons are in the midst of a fantastic season. While they are 9-2, they can still win the ACC for the first time in over a decade. Clawson runs a unique, but high-octane offense. He could leave Winston-Salem for the right job.
Unfortunately, Florida is probably not that. The last time he was part of a major program, the 2008 Tennessee Volunteers were an unmitigated disaster. Given that he prefers to use as many redshirts as possible, that may not fly in a talent-rich state like Florida. If he does leave Wake Forest, it could be for a program like Nebraska. While he could win, the fit seems to be an odd one.
Though Clawson could bring stability to a Florida program in dire need of it, they need an ace recruiter above all else when it comes to replacing Mullen in the long run.
