The Florida Gators are making a change at head coach, firing Dan Mullen amid a 5-6 season.

On the heels of having the wheels fly off the Florida Gators season, the university is making a coaching change.

Florida announced on Sunday that it had fired head coach Dan Mullen. Under Mullen’s watch this season the Gators are 5-6, and are coming off an embarrassing loss to the Missouri Tigers which featured the Florida offense scoring just 16-points in regulation and losing on a two-point conversion in overtime.

It wasn’t that long ago that there was hope in the Swamp that the Gators would be able to hold their own in the SEC. They battled then-No. 1 ranked Alabama hard, nearly winning a 41-39 classic.

From there, however, the bottom fell out something fierce on Florida. An upset loss to Kentucky started a chain reaction that featured losses to LSU and Georgia, and has ended with an overtime loss to Missouri and Mullen’s job.

Dan Mullen Contract Details: What is his buyout?

Less than half-a-year ago Mullen signed an extension with the Gators that raised his pay and kept him in Gainesville through the 2026 season.

Whoops.

Mullen’s buyout is $12 million, which means the Gators are willing to part with a hefty amount of money to be done with him. If Gators fans would have been told back in September that before Thanksgiving Mullen would be getting paid $12 million to get as far away from Gainesville as he possibly can, you’d have been have been pointed to the nearest institution.

But here we are, with the Gators season mor than over, and a rivalry game against the Florida State Seminoles awaiting with as little fanfare and excitement than there has been in a while.

This is a developing story and will be updated with more details.
