What bowl game will the West Virginia football team play in? Well, it looks like the Mountaineers might be facing off against a Big Ten team.

This was so close to being a better season for the West Virginia Mountaineers and their fans.

With the Mountaineers needing to beat the Kansas Jayhawks to even become bowl eligible, it’s fair to wonder what this season could have been had the Mountaineers managed to win any of the three games they lost by six or fewer points.

The Maryland Terrapins, Oklahoma Sooners, and Texas Tech Red Raiders all managed to escape games against West Virginia with narrow wins. If the Mountaineers managed to win some combination there, this season is a lot better.

But, that’s all in the past. The Mountaineers are now looking at bowl season. Where might they end up this year?

West Virginia bowl projections: Mountaineers vs. Rutgers Scarlet Knights in Guaranteed Rate Bowl

According to the latest projections from Brett McMurphy of the Action Network, the Mountaineers could end up playing against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl, which takes place Tuesday, Dec. 28 in Phoenix, Arizona.

It’d be a pretty big road trip for any West Virginia or Rutgers fans who hope to support their favorite team.

This also isn’t the sort of bowl game some West Virginia fans may have been hoping for when the season started. The Mountaineers haven’t had much fun as they’ve been working to rebuild under Neal Brown. But a bowl game and the corresponding extra bowl practices are beneficial for any program that is building. Brown’s team could certainly benefit from some extra reps.
