Former Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Spencer Rattler announced that he is transferring to South Carolina on Monday.

Since this Sunday, college football has seen quarterback Quinn Ewers transfer from Ohio State to Texas and Bo Nix announce that he is leaving Auburn for the transfer portal. But on Monday night, there was more quarterback transfer news.

Spencer Rattler, formerly of the Oklahoma Sooners, announced that he is transferring to South Carolina to play for the Gamecocks.

This news caught many off guard, and the college football media world reacted in kind.

Spencer Rattler announces transfer to South Carolina

Rattler has some Oklahoma connections in South Carolina. The team’s head coach, Shane Beamer, was an associate head coach and tight ends coach for the Sooners in Rattler’s first two years with the program (2019-20).

Entering the 2021 season, Rattler was viewed by many as a Heisman favorite and a potential No. 1 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Yet, the five-star recruit did struggle during the season, with Sooners fans chanting for him to be benched in favor of Caleb Williams. Ultimately, head coach Lincoln Riley made the switch. Following the Sooners’ loss to the Oklahoma State Cowboys and Riley leaving to take the USC Trojans head coaching job, Rattler announced that he was entering the transfer portal.

In nine games this season, Rattler threw for 1,483 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions.

Rattler will not be alone in heading to South Carolina, as former Oklahoma tight end Austin Stogner announced that he is transferring to the program as well.
