Oklahoma football fans chanted for Caleb Williams to be inserted into the game after a bad Spencer Rattler interception vs. West Virginia.

The Oklahoma football program may have the No. 4 team in the land, but its fan base is growing restless with starting quarterback Spencer Rattler.

At the start of the year, Rattler was the presumptive favorite to win the Heisman Trophy and be the No. 1 overall pick by the Houston Texans in the 2022 NFL Draft. Though Oklahoma has yet to lose a game, the fan base was not impressed by what Rattler did in the first half. In fact, they were chanting “We want Caleb [Williams]!” after this terrible interception by Rattler vs. West Virginia.

As with Rattler, Williams was highly touted coming out of high school. He could be better.

Oklahoma football fans want to bench Spencer Rattler in favor of Caleb Williams

This should be Oklahoma’s year. The Sooners are the most talented team in the Big 12. Other national title contenders such as Clemson and Ohio State either are no longer or hanging on by the skin of their teeth. While the Big 12 has some quality teams, Oklahoma’s biggest threat entering the season has already been eliminated in Iowa State.

The last thing Oklahoma wants to do is shoot itself in the foot as Clemson did. Rattler may have more experience under center than D.J. Uiagalelei, but he can be as erratic as the Clemson signal-caller. Williams may be too raw to lead the Sooners to a seventh straight Big 12 title. Then again, Oklahoma cannot afford to commence conference play with a bad home loss to West Virginia.

Head coach Lincoln Riley should not listen to the Oklahoma fan base but must assess the growing concerns with his starting quarterback. Rattler was a slow starter for the Sooners a year ago but did progress in the second half to win the Big 12 and their New Year’s Six bowl. However, he should be better than this in his second year as the starter and his third on the Norman campus.

Who is Caleb Williams?

Williams was a five-star recruit and enrolled in February. He was the No. 7 overall recruit and the No. 2 quarterback recruit, according to the 247Sports Composite. He didn’t get to play his senior season in high school due to COVID canceling the season so he may be a little rusty and not quite ready to start right now. That hasn’t stopped Oklahoma football fans from wanting to get a glimpse of the future today.

While there should not be a quarterback controversy in Norman, Rattler might be making it one.
